My Last Black History Month

October is the last ‘black history month’ of my tenure as chancellor AT The UniverSIty of Manchester

From all cultures and backgrounds we are united by our motto Knowledge Wisdom and Humanity. Black lives have always mattered at the University of Manchester. Sir William Arthur Lewis (1915 – 1991) was an economist, Nobel Prize winner and became Britain’s first black professor at University of Manchester.

It is about Equity and Merit

Thanks to the donors at University of Manchester Equity and Merit Scholarships are for academically excellent students who have the potential to make a significant contribution to sustainable development in their home countries. The scheme is open to applicants from Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Each year The University of Manchester awards Equity and Merit Scholarships to academically excellent students from Sub-Saharan Africa who have the potential to make a significant contribution to sustainable development in their home countries. Across the globe, countries face many developmental challenges, and their brightest young minds have the aptitude and the will to make a difference. Our Equity and Merit Programme helps them to do this.

DR Marcus Rashford, Professor gary younge and PROFESSOR DAVID OLUSOGA

A SELECTION FROM THE MYRIAD

None of the aforementioned work in isolation. We are a part of the myriad of people and cultures at University of Manchester which has half a million alumni in over 190 countries throughout the world. From all cultures and backgrounds we are united by our motto Knowledge Wisdom and Humanity.

The University of Manchester has been named the world's number one university in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, released today (Wednesday, 21 April 2021). The University topped the table of more than 1,200 universities from around the world on action taken towards the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UN's 17 SDGs are the world's call to action on the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing humanity and the natural world. A few words from a University of Manchester Alumni.

“I will always be proud to be part of The University of Manchester family and its alumni community. This deserved recognition for its enormous social, environmental and economic impact is even more reason for everyone associated with the institution to be immensely pleased.”

UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UNAIDS, Dr Winnie Byanyima
